"When four years old he went to live with his older brother, David, and he felt as if David's children were his brothers and sisters, and they had the same feeling. He resided in Plainfield, Mass., and four times represented the town in the Legislature. They were an intellectual family and "Mary Lyon" was a frequent visitor in the household. There were eleven children all born in Plainfield, Mass."

From a Real Estate At Auction advertisement published Wednesday, April 14, 1841 in the Hampshire Gazette, Northampton, Mass. John's minor children Clarissa L, Mary, Charles, and Julia Mack were under the guardianship of Jason Richards. Probate court was ordering the sale of "certain portions of the Real Estate" in Plainfield described as:
Eighteen undivided thirty-fifth parts of the Joy Farm, so called, containing about sixty-three acres of land, well-watered, consisting of mowing, pasturing, and woodland, with a House, Barn, and good Orchard thereon, the same being situate in said Plainfield, adjoining the farm of James Joy on the north. Also nine individual seventieth parts of a Pew in the gallery of the Meeting House in said Plainfield, nearly in front of the pulpit."
