Many thanks to Richard Hollis, FindAGrave member 46868975, for the transfer of Ruth's memorial.

It was with a feeling of sadness & loss when I learned of her death yesterday (1-28-12). She was always cheerful & looked forward to each day with pride & optimism. Ruth, who was always kind hearted & sensitive to other people's needs, had a great love for her Dodson grandparents & shared detailed memories of the time spent with them. There is a great joy in knowing that she is united with them.

I will share some of her memories about her grandparents following Richard Hollis's contribution to her memorial.

Ruth had a deep abiding love for her Dodson grandparents. Following are some of the memories of that special time that she spent with them.

Ruth delighted in telling about the story of her birth. Her parents lived in Yarnaby on the Dodson farm located on the Red River owned by her grandparents. Just before she was born her father was operating the Dodson ferry he had helped build. Their house had been blown away by a tornado, but the barn was still standing. In place of their house, her father had set up a tent for them to live in so he could keep the ferry running. Her mother was in her last days of pregnancy, and time was getting near for Ruth's birth. With the help of her mother's sister, they moved a bed into a corn crib they had cleaned in the barn. By nightfall her mother was in labor, and Ruth said that she was "born in a barn" on May 21, 1926.

While Ruth was still a baby her parents moved to Vernon, TX where her father farmed. The story about her mother's near death at this time can be read on her memorial. They traveled around, but eventually moved to Denison where they lived the remainder of their lives.

Ruth & her brothers enjoyed visiting their Dodson grandparents & would sometimes stay two or three weeks during the summer. They were each assigned chores because the large farm kept everyone busy. There was a big orchard and garden. They had cows, hogs, chickens, guineas, and geese.

She said her Grandpa was a gentle, mild mannered man who was usually quiet. She never heard him raise his voice in anger. He cut up occasionally, but didn't talk as much as her Grandma. She said her Grandma enjoyed talking and never lacked for something to talk about. She was always energetic and stayed busy working around the house and farm. Ruth stayed right on her Grandma's heels. They sometimes sat on the back porch and shelled peas or snapped beans. During this time she enjoyed listening to her tell stories of the past. After supper time, when all the work was done, they would often sit on the porch and tell entertaining stories, some that were pretty scary.

Ruth, her sisters, and brothers slept on feather beds on the parlor floor. Some hot afternoons, their Grandma would take a feather bed to the porch where it was cooler to take a nap. Vines grew up around the porch providing shade and privacy. Ruth and her sisters enjoyed taking their feather beds to the porch to join her.

Ruth thought the spring house was wonderful. It was always cool, and she liked to go there to read during the hot summer days. The walls of the little spring house were lined with shelves filled with hams, cream, and eggs.

Ruth said that her Grandpa loved to play the fiddle. In her mind's eye, she said that she could still see him in his old overalls, playing his fiddle and dancing a jig. Two of his favorite songs were "Hell Among the Yearlings" and "Eighth Day of January."

Ruth said, "Oh, how we loved to go to Grandma & Grandpa's house at Christmas time. It was an exciting time for us. They always had a big Christmas tree that touched the ceiling. Grandma put down feather beds for all of us kids. Ruth said they were as poor as Job's turkey, so they were all happy to get a present of any kind. My brothers would usually get combs, socks, and handkerchiefs, and my sisters and I would get a doll and some handkerchiefs."

These are just a few of Ruth's memories of visiting her grandparents. The old farm house eventually burned down, but it was always her dream of going to visit farm site someday. Ruth said, "It would tickle me to death if I could find a hinge, something off one of the doors, or just a part of the old house."
