He was the president of the board of trustees of Rensselaer Oswego Academy.
He lived in his native town until manhood, after which he spent several seasons teaching on Long Island. He then located at Mexico, Oswego County, N.Y., in 1809, where he lived until his death — a period of nearly half a century.
During most of that time he held some public office, as Town Clerk, Justice of the Peace, Supervisor for many years, County Treasurer, County Judge, and Member of Assembly. All these offices he filled with ability, honesty and integrity. He was an easy and gifted public speaker, and could present his thoughts with so much clearness, logic and pathos as to carry an audience to the same concluding point where he arrived. He was a kind father, an affectionate husband and benevolent neighbor.
