Mary Jane Baker was born in Huntington County, Pennsylvania, April 1st, 1853, and fell asleep in Jesus as the sun was sinking in the west April 12th, 1913.

She was the oldest child of Isaac L. and Catherine E. Baker. At the tender age of four she came with her parents to Kansas in the Spring of 1857. Her father pre-empted his farm which is located three miles west of Baldwin. It was here she grew to womanhood and suffered many privations which accompany a frontier life.

In her girlhood she was converted during a Methodist revival and united with the Methodist Church and remained a faithful Christian ever since. On January 30th, 1879 she married Charles S. Black, one whom she had known from childhood. Unto this union were born three children, all still living.

When first married they located on a farm one and a half miles west of Baldwin at which place they resided for one year and then moved to a farm near Belvoir of this county which was their home for about two years. In the Spring of 1883 they located on the farm one mile north of her childhood home, this has been her home to the time of her death. Although she has been in poor health for a number of years she always had a keen interest in her church and her neighborhood, always anxious for the purity and elevation of mankind. As a mother her sacrificial love for her family supplied their needs; as a friend and neighbor that love went out in sympathy and help to all in sorrow and affliction. Of the family she was first to go in sickness and her thoughtfulness eased many a long day of weary suffering.

The funeral was conducted Monday from the home by Dr. Kester and Dr. Murphy of Baldwin and the quartette of young people furnished the music which was beautiful. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful and certain bespeaks the high esteem in which she was held in the community, and the body was laid to rest in Oakland cemetery.

She is survived by a husband, one daughter and two sons, a father, two brothers, two sisters and hosts of friends to mourn her departure.
