J. B. Lewis, Sr., 56, born 2 Feb 1869, prominently known throughout south Georgia as a naval stores operator, farmer, and businessman, died on the morning of 6 Jan 1927 at a Waycross hospital from injuries sustained several weeks ago when he turned over in an automobile several miles south of Waycross on the Waycross-Homerville Highway.

Mr. Lewis, thought at first to have a broken back, had been unusually cheerful during the past several days and physicians believed him to be on the road to a rapid recovery. It was planned to remove him at an early date from the hospital. A sudden sinking spell, however, proved fatal.

Born near Waynesville, he was the son of the late Charles Henry Lewis and Nancy Kelly Lewis, and had spent practically his entire life in south Georgia. For many years he has been a resident of Waycross, engaged principally in the naval stores business. Several years ago he moved to a point near Manor, but had returned to Waycross, having purchased a new home there. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Waycross and was affiliated with the Waycross Masonic Lodge.

Survivors besides his wife, are three sons, J. B. Jr. of Waycross, Herbert L. of Jacksonville, FL, Cedrick of St. Petersburg, FL; seven sisters, Mrs. D. McMumphrey of Gretna, FL, Mrs. General Strickland (Mamie) of Waynesville, Mrs. Alice Davis of White Springs, FL, Mrs. George Baxter of Hortense, Mrs. J. R. Thomas of Offerman, and Mrs. John Davis of LaBelle, FL.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 3:00 from First Methodist Church.

Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Waycross.

Pallbearers were F. D. Huxford, J. T. Hopkins, I.W. Odum, R. M. Porter, H. H. Burnet, Sr. and W. G. Corbett.
Honorary pallbearers were T. J. Darling, B. G. Parks, D.A. Woods and W. S. Booth of Manor, D. Salisbury, J. M. Cox, W. N. Jones, W. R. Hunt, J. H. King, A. H. Morgan, C. B. Stanton, and John W. Bennett, Sr.

W. L. Hinson and Co. Funeral directed the services.
