Funeral services for Louis Quarles, prominent attorney, businessman, civic leader and yachtsman, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 914 E. Knapp St.
Quarles died Monday night at Columbia Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since January 11 with a heart ailment.
Quarles, 89, had been active in his law practice until he became ill last month. He was the senior partner in the firm of Quarles, Herriott, Clemons, Teschner, and Noelke. He founded the firm in 1910. For many years, it was known as Lines, Spooner & Quarles.
One of his continuing interests was his work with the Medical College of Wisconsin. Quarles had been a director of the Marquette University Medical School since 1923, continuing as a director and president of the Board of Trustees after the school was reorganized as the Medical College Wisconsin in 1967.
A yachtsman for many years, Quarles continued to sail his 46-foot auxiliary ketch, the "Quaviver", through last summer's sailing season on Lake Michigan.
Quarles was born in Kenosha. He was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1905 and was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1908. For two years, he was associated with Quarles, Spence, and Quarles, the law firm of his father, Charles Quarles.
From 1918 to 1922, he was a member of the State Board of Law Examiners.
Quarles, who lived at 2225 N. Lake Dr., formerly lived in Fox Point. He was president of the Fox Point Village Board from 1931 to 1936, and was a member of the board from 1926 to 1931. He had a long association with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. He was a trustee from 1929 to 1961, when he reached the company's mandatory retirement age, a member of the executive and finance committee from 1933 to 1961, and was active president from June 17, 1949 to Aug. 10, 1949.
Quarles was a director of the Allen-Bradley Co., Miller Brewing Co., Milwaukee Road, Marshall & Ilsley Stock Corp., Oil Gear Co., and the Peter Cooper Corp., Buffalo; Kimberly-Clark Corp., Neenah; Ozite Corp, Chicago, and Ozite Corp of Canada. He was an emeritus director of the Marshall & Ilsley Bank and of Allis-Chalmers.
From 1919 to 1964, Quarles was a trustee of Milwaukee-Downer College and was its board chairman for many years. He was a trustee emeritus of Lawrence University, Appleton, and an honorary director of Milwaukee Country Day School.
Quarles was board chairman and a director of the Allen-Bradley Foundation and a director of the Allis-Chalmers Foundation.
He was a member of the American and Milwaukee County Bar Associations, and the American, Milwaukee and Chicago Patent Law Associations. He had bee president of both Milwaukee groups.
Quarles was a member of the Milwaukee Club, the University Club, the City Club, Psi Upsilon, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Phi and the Masonic order. He was recently named to Alpha Sigma Nu, a national Jesuit honorary society at Marquette.
He was a longtime member of the Milwaukee Yacht Club, where he was known as "The Commodore", an office he filled for several years. The "Quaviver", Quarles' cruising yacht, was built in 1936 and was a familiar sight on the lake ever since.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Will C. Huggins of Shorewood; a son, Charles S. Quarles of Whitefish Bay, who is associated with the Quarles law firm, and a sister, Mrs. Louis O. French of Milwaukee. Quarles' wife, Inez French Quarles, died in 1968. [A daughter, Ruth French Quarles, died at age three.]
