She was raised by Collins cousins from Knockgorm after her mother died in 1912. One of her Knockgorm cousins was Mary Therese Collins (1913-1929), whose body was found in a Caheragh graveyard in 1979, uncorrupted.
While staying on cousin Nora Collins McCarthy's farm in Derryduff, Mary met John Humphrey Collins, a laborer. They married April 29, 1923. They had eight children (one died in infancy). A very resourceful woman, she went on to win prizes at the local fairs for her vegetables and blackberry jam. She was an adventurous curious person, loved going places, keeping in touch with relatives, and taking photos.
She died while on her way home from visiting her brother Bob in Bantry.
