Doug Foster, 77, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Friday, October 1, 2010, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Monday, October 4, 2010, at Irwinville Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Cummings officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Foster was born May 1, 1933 in Cobb County, GA to the late Chester E. and Becky Walker Foster. A 1951 graduate of Irwinville High School in Irwinville, GA, he was a member of the Irwinville State Basketball Championship Team in 1950 and 1951. He graduated from the University of Georgia where he played basketball and baseball. His senior year he coached UGA’s freshman basketball team. He served in the United States Army. He was Vice President of Shipping for Avon in Atlanta before returning to farm in Ben Hill and Irwin counties. He was a member of Irwinville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue Brown Foster of Fitzgerald; Daughters: Kaye and Hershell Guthrie of Douglas, GA and Suzanne and Bob Dixon of Vidalia, GA; 6 grandchildren: Natalie Flake, Doug Pope, John Dixon, Elizabeth Dixon, Abigail Dixon and Paul Dixon; great-grand daughter, Jorjanne Flake; Brothers: Herman and Cora Faye Foster and Glendyon and Bonnie Foster of Fitzgerald and Archie and Linda Foster of Ocilla; Sisters: Marcella Singletary of Kennesaw, GA and Reba and Gerald Day of Sylvester. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by granddaughter, Jorjanne Pope; grandson-in-law, Michael Flake and brother-in-law, Buddy Singletary.
