Mrs. Mehitable (Bangs) Roberts, the childless widow of John Roberts, Jr., was the 2nd wife of Brigadier-General Jedidiah Preble. They were married on the 9th of May, 1754, by the Rev. Thomas Smith. She was twenty-six years old and Jedidiah was forty-seven years of age. Mehitable was the daughter of Captain Joshua Bangs and Mehitable Clarke, who came to Falmouth from Harwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Mehitable and Jedidiah had five sons and two daughters together. Their third son, was the distinguished United States Naval Commodore Edward Preble. Mehitable Preble died on the 20th of August, 1805, at the age of 77. She was buried at the side of Jedidiah Preble, where a plain slate head-stone marked her resting place.
