Pvt. Hiram Bland

Served with Co. I 1st GA. Inf. CSA He was captured in May of 1864 and sent to the Prison Camp at Camp Chase Ohio, There he died of dysentery on Nov. 24th 1864 at age 24 He was buried in the Camp Cemetery until that night when his body along with 6 others who died that same day were Desinterred by now unknown ghouls (Names lost to history) and the whear abouts of the bodies have been a mystery even today.Col. W.P. Richardson 25 Ohio Vol. Inf. Commanding Camp Chase at the time reported on No. 26th 1864 the following. "On the night of the 24th instant the bodies of six deceased prisoners were stolen from the grave yard attached to camp where prisoners only are buried. I arrested the perpetrators of this outrage and referred the matter to General Hooker and was by him directed to turn the prisoner and papers over to the prosecuting attorney of this county, which I have done. Respectfully referred to the Commissary-General of Prisoners" The Bodies were never recoverd.

Captured at Atlanta, Ga., July 22, 1864, Hiram Bland of GA died of pneumonia as a POW in Chase Camp Ohio.


His body was stolen by a Dr. Flowers and given to the Medical College of Cleveland, Ohio. According to a newsletter article written Dec 29, 2004, the incident was well documented by newspaper articles written in 1864 in the area of Camp Chase, Ohio.


Bland left a wife and 5 children to mourn his death.


Through microfilm from National Archives and Records Administration one would be able to find out who exactly was dug up and who was re-interred. The five soldiers whose bodies were sold to the medical college dissection room in Cleveland were:

--Hiram BLAND of Georgia


--A. J. Hensleyof Virginia


--John W. Lester of Tennessee


-- Jonathan Lindley of Georgia


-- Thomas STEPHENS of Louisiana





A memorial was also placed in Upper Mill Creek Cemetery in Bulloch Co, GA.
