Hamp Rothwell of Vienna, a long-time prominent attorney in Central Missouri, died at 3:45 p.m. yesterday at Charles E. Still Hospital. He was 79 years old and had been in failing health for the past two years.

Mr. Rothwell was born in Ashland, July 20, 1877, the son of Alec and Sally Price Rothwell. He received his high school education at the Ashland High School and in 1902 he graduated from the University of Missouri School of Law and heard a commencement address by Mark Twain.

Following his graduation from law school Mr. Rothwell taught school and became city attorney at Columbia. He also practiced private law at Moberly and St. Louis from 1918 until 1942.

In 1944--two years after his retirement--Mr. Rothwell was elected prosecuting attorney of Maries County and served in this capacity for four terms.

Following his retirement "Uncle Hamp" as he was known to close friends, practiced law in the federal courts of St. Louis and Kansas City. Much of his fame was gained as prosecuting attorney at Maries County. He built a reputation for tempering enforcement with sympathy, setting rehabilitation of an offender as one of his objectives.

Mr. Rothwell found that Circuit Judge Sam C. Blair shared his feelings of compassion, and twice the prosecuting attorney was commended for his enforcing work by the Missouri Peace Officers Association.

As prosecutor, Mr. Rothwell with the full co-operation of Judge Blair, constituted an unofficial domestic relations court and by his advice averted many divorces. He was favored in divorce cases by the rule of Judge Blair that all such cases should lay over for a 30 day "cooling off period."

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lee Rothwell; two sons, Fountain Rothwell of Jefferson City and Frank Rothwell of San Antonio, Texas, a brother, Allen Rothwell of St. Louis and five grandchildren.

Funeral services have been scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday at a Vienna funeral home. Burial will be in Vienna.
