Walter Saunders/Sanders was born in Kilkenney, Ireland. He came to the United States in 1870, at the age of 16. Mr. Saunders worked for the New York Central Railroad and came to the Cotton Belt in 1884. He was one of the oldes engineers at the Cotton Belt. He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Maccabees, Knights of Columbus and Ancient Order of Hibernians, and a Lifetime member of the Catholic Church.

Mr. Saunders died August 13, 1914, at the Tyler Hotel. He had been in ill health for several months and had returned from Mayo Clinic. He was survived by his widow, and children: Mrs. Ed Gilroy, Caldwell, Kansas; Walter Saunders, El Paso; Mrs. John Costin, Tyler; Ellen, Margaret, Joe and Leo Saunders, all of Tyler. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. [Tyler Daily Courier Times, August 14, 1914; 1910 Smith County Census]
