E. B. Hughes was born October 23, 1872 and came to Gooding from Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1909, and set up a plumbing shop in a small house at 502 Colorado. He later added on to that house to make his home and in 1910 his wife, Lillian and daughter Olive joined him. Mrs. Hughes wasn't very well impressed with Gooding and called it, "two planks across an old river bed." She made her home here for many years until her death Oct 28, 1959.
About 1910-11 Hughes purchased a building in the 200 block of Main St and shared the building with Garlock Title Co for many years. Mr. Hughes and Jim Henry joined together in a mine in Stanley Basin around 1936 and formed the Elk Creek Mining Corporation. From this interest in mining came a rock and gem hobby joined in by Swan Jering.
E.B. Hughes passed away Dec 8, 1946 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery beside his wife and daughter.
Olive Hughes was born February 22, 1909 and was a long time employee of Thompson Furniture in Gooding. During WWII she worked at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco as the cashier but returned to Gooding. She lived in the Hughes home at 502 Colorado until her death Jan 24, 1974. The Hughes' adopted the daughter of a niece after the mother's death in childbirth. That daughter, Beverley, makes her home in Boise where she has worked for the State for years. She is married to Roy Williamsen.
The Hughes backyard was always resplendent with beautiful Canna flowers. Jess Story cared for the flowers.
