Obituary 5 April 1906
On Thursday March 29th Robert Rowe, one of the oldest settlers of this district passed away at his home 6-10-25 (six miles south east of Virden) at the ripe old age of 86 years. Mr. Rowe was born in Suffolk England in the year 1820.

He immigrated with his parents Benjamin and Sarah Ann Rowe and three siblings, Eliza, Sarah, and Benjamin Jr., about 75 years ago (1830), settling near Oshawa Ontario, where the youngest brother John still lives.

He was the eldest of a family of nine, only three of whom survive him. He was called out to serve his country during the troubles of 1837 and spent some time in Toronto. In the year 1854 he moved from Oshawa to the township of Logan near the town of Mitchell Ontario where he cleared a farm and reared a large family. He was twice married, (first wife Mary Jane Hadden). Their children were George, James, John, Robert, Sarah, and Thomas Rowe.

With his 2nd wife (Isabella Robb) and the younger members of his family he moved to the Virden district in the spring of 1889 where he has lived for 17 years.

He liked the country and was always contented with his lot. An industrious and honest man, he lived a simple and blameless life. He was an adherent of the Christian or Disciple church and a Conservative in politics, but took very little interest in public affairs, and finding his greatest pleasure at home keeping everything neat and tidy about the place.

Though in feeble health for some years, he was still able to do his chores and work a little in his garden until six months ago when he was taken very ill and suffered greatly at times from then until the end. He leaves behind a widow, six sons and five daughters to mourn his loss. He was a kind and indulgent husband and father and will be greatly missed by the surviving members of his family.

One son and four daughters attended the funeral on Saturday last. Rev. Peter Strang officiated at the house and at the grave.

MacKenzie Rebellion
The new settlers soon had an opportunity to show their loyalty to "King and Country". In 1837 the Mackenzie rebellion broke out. Many of the Darlington settlers, led by Capt. Trull turned out and marched to Toronto to show their loyalty and when ten or twelve miles from Toronto they went into the woods and cut sticks and placed them on their shoulders, having no guns. Sir Francis Bondhead was then governor-General of Canada, and when they marched up King St., the Governor came out and addressed the crowds, and made special mention of his Darlington friends who came to help without arms.
