Ralph Gemmel Bowen Sr. was a farmer and schoolteacher in rural Beaufort County, NC. He was born in Washington County, but his family moved to Beaufort County where his grandfather, William Riley Ross, owned some land. The Bowens were farmers. Ralph went to Wake Forest College in 1926 to be a schoolteacher, attending for one year. He taught in a one-room school house for a time. Later he left teaching and went back to farming.

Ralph Bowen was first married to Hix Canady. However, she died during childbirth. Her and the child are buried in the same cemetery as Ralph Bowen. Later, Ralph Bowen married Sudie Holland Toler of Blounts Creek, NC. They had two boys.

Ralph had poor eyesight and was legally blind by the time he was fifty. However, the family still was able to run a farm producing tobacco, corn, soybeans, collards, tomatoes, potatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and other sorted beans and vegetables.

The Bowen farm was far back in the woods. There was a sandy road that led up to the farm where Bowen Rd. in Aurora, NC now leaves off. They never did have a phone hook up back there (although they did get electricity in the 1950s). After Ralph and wife Sudie got older, they sold the family farm to Texas Gulf phosphate company and moved closer to community folks in Small, renting a home from William Hardy, not too far from where their farm had been.

Ralph Bowen died at home on December 13, 1976.
