He definitely served in the War of 1812. As to what rank he had, I am not certain at this time. Some say General, some say Major and some don't say.

Sometime in approximately 2015, someone was kind enough to send me written evidence that Jacob Reed Brooks was not a particularly high ranking officer, for example, a Major or General in the War of 1812 as my ancestors (his descendants) liked to tell me. He was in fact, a Sergeant. I am unable right now to add anything about that correspondence. When I can, I will.

He had at least two wives that I know of, Mary Bailey and Sarah "Sally" Connally Gaddis Brooks, having had 13 children by the latter.

His stone is/was overturned but had inscription on 3 sides; so at least some of it should still be visible. He was my great great grandfather. I don't know why his memorial page disappeared, but it did. I have seen proof that his stone was righted by someone, thanks be to whoever did that, and just says J. R. Brooks, mentions War of 1812, and has a list of his 13 children by Sarah "Sally" Connally Gaddis Brooks on one side of it.

Since his tombstone is in Walker County, Georgia, USA, it is likely that is where he died. His 13th child was born at the headwaters of the Chickamauga (River)in Walker County, Georgia, USA; so he had roots there.

He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and some Indian Wars. He was a legislator in Georgia, according to family tradition, and he created a phonetic alphabet/language for Cherokees to use to read, and for White Men to understand. He had at least one other wife, before Sarah, but with Sarah "Sally" Connally Gaddis Brooks, who is my ancestor, they had 13 children together. I think the other wife's name was Mary Bailey. I'm not sure.

I was kindly given this list of Jacob's and Sally's children by another FindAGrave member. I removed a #6 which was probably a typo, and I added the middle name for my great Grandfather, Tamerlane Xenophon Brooks.

Mr. Jacob R. Brooks was born in Wilkes county, Georgia, May 10th 1787, and died March 22nd 1872, at the residence of his son, W. L. Brooks in Walker county, Georgia, from the infirmities of old age. He was a regular soldier in the U. S. Army five years, in the war of 1812. He represented DeKalb and Cobb counties, Georgia, in the legislature. He raised seven sons and five daughters, seven of whom and a wife, went to the grave before him.

Note: There is no son named W. L. Brooks; so I am thinking they meant Levi Wellborn Brooks, which, transposed, would be W. L. Brooks.
