Lucas T. Harter was born to Dr. Richard Harter and Nancy (Hume) Harter in 1838 in Indiana. He enlisted as a Private in Company B, Indiana 2nd Cavalry Regiment on 22 Oct 1862 and was promoted to Full Corporal. Corporal Harter was captured at Stilesborough, Georgia, on 13 Sep 1864 and held in the Cahaba Federal Prison near Cahaba, Alabama. After his release Corporal Harter was placed on the steamship Sultana to be returned to his home. The overloaded ship exploded on 27 Apr 1865 near Memphis with great loss of life. Corporal Harter perished in the explosion at the age of 23, and there is no record that his body was ever recovered. He was never married.

Sadly, Corporal Harter's brother, Private Madison W. Harter died at York, Pennsylvania, on 16 Jul 1865. Private Harter was a member of Company C, 147th Infantry Regiment Indiana.

The sole surviving son in the family, Joseph G. Harter, served in Company B, Indiana 11th Cavalry Regiment from 24 Nov 1863 to 19 Sep 1865.
