He was a son of George Owen/s (abt 1774 - aft 1850) who was living with Jacob and family during the 1850 census but apparently died prior to 1860. George married Nancy Black (1776 Greenville Co S.C. - bef 1840) a dau of Jacob Bennett Black and Hannah (LNU) of Greenville Co S.C. Jacob B. Black Probate papers, Greenville County SC, identify "George Owens and wife Nancy of Haywood Co NC" among his heirs.
