George was the son of Dr. Thomas Owen who resided in Greensboro in Greene County. George apparently picked up his skills from his father. He was one of the original settlers of Meriwether county who came to the cove area around 1829 or 1830. Although he was not a certified doctor, he was considered a doctor and often treated people in this isolated area. He brought with him his two slaves Willis and Millie. He was one of the founders of the Macedonia Baptist Church in Manchester and was one of it's first deacons. He owned one of the best plantations in the county on the banks of the Flint River. Some of his descendants added an "s" to the name and that accounts for many years later when his headstone was made it had the "s" added to his name.
