Mabel Hoback Phelps, 95, of Bedford, Va., died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, in Campbell's Rest Home. She was born in Bedford County on Monday, November 8, 1915, a daughter of the late John Samuel and Macie Robertson Hoback. In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Burge Phelps; a son, Clarence Allen Phelps; and three brothers, Bedford Hoback and Raymond Hoback who died on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and Giles Cecil Hoback.

Mabel is survived by her son, John Raymond Phelps and his wife, Laura, and their children, Kathie Mann and Jason and Derek Phelps; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Mann; a great-grandson, Julian Scott; a daughter-in-law, Joann Phelps; two step grandchildren, Tammie Smith and Joanie Hudson; five step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elsie Hoback Davis, Rachel Hoback Parker, and Lucille Hoback Boggess; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Leftwich Hoback; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mabel was owner and operator of Phelps Coal, Wood and Grocery on Plunkett Street for over 50 years. She was also a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and a former member of Center Point United Methodist Church. The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and staff of Campbell Rest Home for their care and concern.

A celebration of Mabel's life will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011, in the Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Davidson officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Virginia Memorial Park.
