Joseph was the son John "Gentleman Jack" Chrisman and Nancy Ann Harrison.

His first wife was Elizabeth Lincoln, daughter of Jacob Lincoln and Dorcas Robinson. She was a 1st cousin 1x removed of President Abraham Lincoln. She and Joseph were married in 1821 in Rockingham County, Virginia. The couple had one child, John Lincoln "Jack" Chrisman.

He married his second cousin, Jane "Jennie" Chrisman in 1826, in Frederick County, Virginia. They had the following children:

1. Isaac Henry
2. Albert Ellis
3. Joseph Marcus
4. George Kilpatrick
5. Hugh Harrison
6. Ann Elizabeth
7. Charles Rockingham
8. Henry Isaac
9. Virginia Margaret
10. Charles Spear
11. Harrison Taylor
