Pernel E. Hutton, 87, of Bluffs, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.

He was born March 31, 1923, in White Hall, the son of John Baxter and Maude Mae Bruce Hutton. He married Caroline M. Mueller on Jan. 30, 1948, in Bluffs. She survives in Bluffs.

Also surviving are eight brothers and sisters, Loyd Dean Hutton, Wanda Strickler and Ila (Gary) Hoots, all of Jacksonville, Barbara (Estill) Gerard of Lincoln, John (Sharon) Hutton of Bluffs, Larry Hutton of Sulphur, La., Richard (Cora) Hutton of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Betty Kesterson of Meredosia; special nephew, Russell (Ladema) Sappington of Griggsville; and several nieces and nephews. Pernel was preceded in death by five brothers, Don Hutton, Kenneth (surviving wife, Karrie) Hutton, Jack (surviving wife, Mary) Hutton, Bruce (surviving wife, Bonnie) Hutton and an infant brother, Floyd Hutton; and two sisters, Elda Todd and an infant sister, Rosemary Hutton.

Pernel operated both the Gulf and Texaco gas stations in Bluffs for several years. He retired from Mills Auto Parts in Jacksonville. Pernel was a U.S. Army veteran. During World War II he served in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia during the European Campaign. He received several metals, including the Bronze Star for his service to his country. Pernel was a member of the Bluffs American Legion Post 441. During his later years, he enjoyed gardening with his wife, Caroline, building bird houses and helping his friends in Bluffs.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Mackey Daws Funeral Home in Bluffs, with interment at Fairview Cemetery near Bluffs. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday with the family meeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Nursing Center or the Bluffs American Legion Post 441. Condolences may be left online at www.mackeydaws.com.
