John Bates was born in Linton, Derby, England to William and Mary Robinson and was the third of seven children. He was christened on Nobember 24, 1816 in the Gresley Church, Derby, England.

John was a stable keeper or the master of the king's horses and hounds.

John married Hannah Draycott (1837) and had seven children with her.

John and Hannah with their children left Liverpool, England on February 18, 1856. They sailed on the ship the Caravan arriving in New York on March 27, 1856 and settled in Pennsylvania. John and his family left Pennsylvania for Utah Territory in 1860. On September 1, 1860, their wagon train arrived in Great Salt Lake. The trip was made in seventy days.

John homesteaded a place where the Silver Creek and the Weber meet near what is now Wanship, Summit County, Utah. Hannah died the day after Christmas, December 26, 1863.

John then took as his wives, Rachel (Ragnille) Eliasen (1864), Orline Dorthea Christianson (1865), Margaret Brooks (1866), Sarah Edwards (1870) and Hedvig Charlott Youngquist. When it became illegal to have multiple wives, Margaret and Sarah divorced John. In all John had a total of 14 children; seven from his first wife, Hannah, six from his second wife, Rachel, and one from his fourth wife, Margaret.

John always enjoyed his horses and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. John was also musically inclined. He was a good provider and a very religious man.

John was one of the school trustees, a high priest, a presiding elder and a second counselor of the High Priests in the Weber River Country for many years.
