Mary Ann emmigrated with her parents, two of her three sisters, Emma and Harriet, (Eliza came later) two brothers, John and Hyrum. Her family settled in Pennsylvania for about four years. In 1860, Mary Ann, her parents, and her brother Hyrum left for Utah Territory in one of the many Mormon migrations, crossing the plains. At Florence, Nebraska they joined up with the John Smith wagon train consisting of 359 fellow travelers. The wagon train left Florence on June 15, 1860.
After 70 days of travel, the Bates family emerged from Emigration Canyon on September 12, 1860, arriving in Salt Lake City. Later, her father was sent to colonize a new primitive area, in the Weber River Country near what is now Wanship, Utah. The family lived on Silver Creek in Summit County and then later moved to Wanship.
Mary Ann, married Augustus Schwerdtfeger (changed to Swetfield or Sweatfield). Mary Ann and Gus had three sons: Augustus, John, and Nimrod. They lived in Wanship, Summit County, Utah.
Upon Gus' death, Mary Ann married her first cousin, Simon Street on March 6, 1872. They were married by justice of the peace, Henry Reynolds in Wanship, Utah.
Simon and Mary Ann had seven children of their own: Hyrum, George, Simon, Mary Ann, Emma Eliza, Fannie and Lucina. Simon and Fannie died shortly after their births. Mary Ann died shortly after the birth of her last child, Lucina, from complications of childbirth. She was only 34.
