Baby "Kate" was the first of several children of Capt. J.C. and Mildred Hutcheson to pass away at a tender age. Kate's father wrote of her death in his 9/28/1876 letter to his daughter, Elise: "Oh how this will shock you, the sweet tender little thing looks so pretty & natural with a smile on her face and flowers in her hand and on her heart. Poor little thing she was not appreciated here and God took her to him. Pa was so particularly fond of the little thing that we all say continually-"Grand Pa has lost his little pet". This is our first affliction and we hope it may chasten us to turn from our transgressions & look to God and obey his command." "Our little baby will be buried this evening at 4 1/2 o'clock in Glenwood Cemetery of the city, it is our house more effectually now than heretofore for here we bury our dead, and the ground covers bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. May God perserve and protect you all. Amen"
