Little "Willie" was the last child born to his mother. He was named in honor of his pioneer uncle who had arrived in Texas prior to the Civil War and who was mortally wounded in 1862 at the Battle of Gaines' Mill, VA. "Willie's" mother died within a day of his birth. His father said of him in his 4/27/1884 letter to his daughter, Elise: "She (meaning the nurse) is certainly most kind and attentive to Allen and Willie. The latter is the most handsomest of the boys I believe, not excepting my pet Allen." As shown in the Chattanooga records for 1884, Willie died of Congestion on July 2nd or 3rd in Hamilton County, Tenn.
