Anthony was born in Ireland. By the age of thirteen he had lost both parents. At that time he went to work in the shipyards of Scotland, Liverpool and North America. While working in the area of the Erie Canal he met and later married Mary Dunn about 1857. The initially lived in New York where they had there first child Matthew John Kane. Shortly after they moved and lived for a few years in Venango County, PA where there family expanded to nine children. In the late 1880's the family made there final move to the Bourbon County, Kansas area.
