James Arthur Ayers, 79, of Lufkin, was born June 15, 1930 in Cherokee County, Texas, the son of the late Susan Ara Holt and Charley Wesley Ayers. He passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 in a local nursing facility.

Mr. Ayers was a retired carpenter who worked and lived in Houston. He was the 9th child of a large family. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, where he earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

Uncle James was a "handsome devil" who had a great wit. He said he found Jesus while on his knees in the kitchen about 35 years ago.

Survivors include his nieces, Phylis Golden of Dickinson and Susan Ayers of Lufkin; sisters, Mamie Kunz of Trinity and Mildred Chapman of Toccoa, GA; sisters-in-law, Olena Ayers of Lufkin and Alice Hillin of Whitehouse; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his sisters, Daisy Belle and Pauline; brothers, Eddy, S.C., Mart, Marshall Lee and Bill.

Services for Mr. Ayers will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Reverend Horace Fletcher officiating. Entombment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family prior to service time.
