William Hershey was born and raised on the "old homestead" which is now listed in the "National Register of Historical Places." In 1862, he enlisted in the Sixteenth Indiana Light Artillery. In April, 1865, he was stationed at Fort Washington, near Mount Vernon and was attending a play at Ford's Theater on the night that President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. During his lifetime, William Hershey spoke on this subject before clubs and organizations many times.
In 1867, William married Frances Ketrow. After her death in 1872 he married Elizabeth Mannion the following year.
