Joseph Hershey came to Perry Township with his wife, Marie, and daughter, Lurenna in 1834 in a two wheeled rig. He had bought by mail, 184 acres of land in Perry Township. Joseph had been a circuit rider in Virginia and Maryland and began preaching all over northern Indiana. He founded the Union United Brethren Church in Perry Township.
Between 1840 and 1856 Joseph completed the historical home that is still there today.
