Jane McKell Muse was the eldest daughter of Robert and Jane (née McKell) Muse. She was known by all as Mackie and attended the Due West Female College in Due West, South Carolina. This school's original mission was to educate women to become teachers. Her brother, Joseph, attended Erskine College & Theologian Seminary, also in Due West.

Jane was known and loved by all as Mackie.
