My great-great grandfather, Robert Muse, was born in the district of Fairfield, South Carolina in December 1817, the son of Joseph and Nancy Rebecca Muse. Historical records reveal that around 1838 he had move west with a group of Associate Reformed Presbyterians, called reformers from the Fairfield District, South Carolina to what was then Boardtown in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. They were mostly young Scotch-Irish, who migrated west in search of richer farmland. It was during this time that Robert met his future wife. Once settled, Robert acquired a small plantation and farmed.

On May 24, 1843 Robert Muse married Elizabeth Jane McKell, daughter of the late William McKell of Jenkinsville, Fairfield District, SC and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bell McKell of Starkville, Mississippi. They had eight known children:
William McKell (1845 – 1845)
Jane McKell "Mackie" (1847 – 1922)
Rev. Joseph Brainard (1848 – 1920)
Elizabeth Bell "Lizzie" (1850 – 1924)
Nancy Rebecca (1852 - 1902)
William Montgomery (1855 – 1867)
Infant (1857 - 1857)
Mary "Mollie" (1858 – 1938)

During the Civil War, Robert Muse served as a 2nd Lieut. in Company G, 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry under Captains George W. Fortune and William Young.

Robert lived to the ripe old age of 86 years, living his last years with his daughters Lizzie Muse Alston and Jane "Mackie" Muse in Starkville, Mississippi.
