Harriet M. Root.

Harriet M. Root was born November 22, 1832, at Athens, Ohio, where her childhood days were spent. She was married March 16, 1848, to Henry Tedrow and this couple enjoyed over 57 years of married life broken only by the death of the husband July 4, 1905. To this union was born twelve children and it was this mother's privilege to see eleven of them married and settled in life. At an early age she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and lived a faithful consistent christian life. In the early pioneer days she moved with her husband and little ones to Osceola, Clarke county, Ia, and in this county was spent the greater part of her life and here the children were reared. She knew what it was to endure the hardships of an early pioneer life and the struggles caused by a long Civil war. In 1866 she moved to a farm north of Woodburn, Iowa where they resided until the husband's death, after which most of her time was spent with her daughter, Mrs. Iva Doughty of Lexi Lexington, Nebr., and where she resided at the time of her death December 22, 1913, aged 81 years, one month and 1 day.

She was ever known as a devoted wife, a sacrificing mother and a loving friend. She leaves to mourn her departure seven children (five having preceded her to the better world), twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren besides three sisters and seven brothers.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. Simeon Clark at the M. E. church at Woodburn, Iowa, December 26th, 1913, and interment was made in the Ottawa cemetery.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fagot, Mr. L. E. Tedrow and Mrs. Iva Doughty of Lexington, Nebr., Mrs. James Hoke of Wing, Ill., Mrs. Hattie Scott of Elm Creek, Nebr., and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Turner of Centerville, Iowa, Mrs. James Page who is a daughter and children, Ruby and Garnett.
