Born Walter Lee Tommie, he was the son of James Alexander and Charlcia Ann "Charcie Mae" Browning Tommie. Walter's birth father died in 1903. His mother may have married a man named D. A. Hamlin before she married Nelson A. (aka Gus Nelson ) Johnson. During childhood, Walter started using Johnson as his surname. The reporting source on Walter's death certificate was a Mrs. Dorothy Johnson, who (apparently confused) gave his parents names as James Johnson and Charcie Browning. It is not known if Walter was married to Dorothy. Walter was divorced from Natalie Leavitt by whom he had several children.

Walter was predeceased by his father.

Walter was survived his mother and stepfather and by two sons, Willie James Tommie and Raldolph Patrick (Pat) Tommie; daughters Nellie Clair Tommie Wynne, Vera Lee Tommie Adams.
