Hamlin before she married Nelson A. (aka Gus Nelson ) Johnson. During childhood, Walter started using Johnson as his surname. The reporting source on Walter's death certificate was a Mrs. Dorothy Johnson, who (apparently confused) gave his parents names as James Johnson and Charcie Browning. It is not known if Walter was married to Dorothy. Walter was divorced from Natalie Leavitt by whom he had several children.
