Margaret Montgomery was born on October 24, 1788 in the Fairfield District of SC. She was the daughter of Hugh & Margaret Scott Montgomery. The Montgomery's were large land owners in this area; which was divided amongst relatives upon her father's death in April 1804. As founding members of the Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church, also known as 'Old Brick Church', Hugh Montgomery is buried there.

Margaret's young life revolved around family and the church. It was there that she met & married James Nason, originally from Dublin Ireland, on July 8th, 1813 at the 'Old Brick Church' ARP. This union produced nine children:

Catherine Atkins [Nason] Bell (1814 – 1847)
George Lancaster (1816 – 1884)
Margaret Scott (1816 – 1873)
John Franklin Nason (1818 – 1884)
Elizabeth Jean [Nason] McKell (1820 – 1875)
Mary Miranda [Nason] Reynolds (1822 – 1877)
William Pinckney (1824 – 1909)
Hugh Montgomery (1826 – 1896)
Richard Calvin Wilson (1828 – 1852)

Around 1838, James & Margaret moved their family, along with their Montgomery, Bell, McKell and Nason relations to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi and settled in and around Starkville; then called Boardtown.

Margaret died on November 22, 1852 in Starkville. She is buried by her husband of 39 years.
