Silvanus Gibbs was the son of Benjamin Gibbs (1717-1757) of Wareham and his wife, Joanna Swift Gibbs (1723-1794). Silvanus was taken at a young age and raised by his grandfather, Benjamin Gibbs, Esq. (1673-1757)of Sandwich. His grandfather was a prominent businessman in early Sandwich. When he died, he left a large amount of real estate in and around Sandwich and Plymouth to his young grandson.

Falmouth, Barnstable Co.; also, Sergeant, Capt. Ward Swift's co., Col.
Freeman's regt.; service, 7 days, on an alarm at Dartmouth and Falmouth
Sept. 6, 1778; also, 2d Lieutenant, 8th co., Col. Freeman's (1st
Barnstable Co.) regt. of Mass. militia; list of officers; commissioned
April 21, 1779.) For his service in the Revolution, he gained the title of Lieutenant which he used until his death.

He was a mariner, owned numerous ships based in Wareham. An early trader with Cuba and Puerto Rico specializing in the sugar and rum trade.

Over the years, he reassembled his grandfather's estate. He bought back from his siblings land left to them by their grandfather.
