John S. Rickard

John S. Rickard, son of David and Catherine Rickard was born January 23, 1858 at Stahlstown, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and departed this life August 10, 1938, at his home near Guide Rock at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 17 days.

The family moved to Wooster Ohio, in 1866; remaining there until the fall of 1870. They then moved to Nebraska, arriving at Lincoln, November 9th. On November 10 they continued their journey to the homestead they had chosen near DeWitt, Nebraska; not so far from the old Freeman Homestead, where the family of younger children grew into manhood and womanhood.

He was united in marriage to Alma (sic) Randall in the spring of 1880 and went to housekeeping near DeWitt for a short time. From there they moved to Lane County, Kansas, then to Frontier County, Nebraska; where Mrs. Rickard and an infant daughter died in 1890, leaving the young father with four small children. The following March he moved his family back to DeWitt, Nebraska, where he married Carrie E. Boggs, December 23, 1892. In the spring of 1893 he and his family left for a farm north of Cambridge, Nebraska; remaining there only until the spring of 1894 when the family moved north west of Guide Rock where he spent the rest of his life with the exception that portions of the last ten summers have been spent in the beautiful Beaver Valley north of Bartlett, Nebraska. Even at his advanced age he had, as late as this spring, decided to give the rest of his time to building up a cattle ranch, but ill health intervened and the last three months of his life were spent in a bed of agony.

He leaves to mourn his death his loving wife, Carrie and twelve children: Bernard, Willard, Orly, and Melvin of Elgin, Nebraska. Orville, Mrs. Wilber Reeve and Mrs. Glenn Clark of Los Angeles, California: Mrs. Edward Bright of Red Cloud, Nebraska, Myrtle, Claude, Earl and Murray of Guide Rock; twenty grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; one brother D. H. Rickard of Salt Lake City, Utah and one sister Lela Randall of Los Angelos, California.

While he was reserved and seldom attended church his convictions, when expressed, left no doubt as to his spiritual belief.

Father dear, your tempestuous voyage is o'er. Your bark has sailed beyond the silver sea and is safely anchored in that quiet harbor where our Captain will guide it throughout eternity. No more sorrow, no more cares, no more pains. We will miss your earthly presence so. Your going has left a void that can ne'er be filled, but we rejoice with thee when we know that the Soul that left your pain racked body is to reign forever in that haven of tomorrow. For so long a time angels beckoned thee, but in defiance we held thee here. Even when the silver chord was severed reluctantly we let thee go. So strong has been that already we feel the power of thy beckoning hands for us to follow. Ere long Father Dear, we leave this earthly habitation to dwell with thee in that Home where His glory forever we'll share.
