Adam Butner Jr. is the fifth of nine known children of Adam Butner Sr. (1765-1843) and Maria Magdalena Hauser Butner (1768-1811), who married on 01 Nov 1789 at Bethania, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. John and Maria lived their entire lives in the vicinity of the Moravian community of Bethania, Stokes (became Forsyth) County, North Carolina. After Maria died, Adam remarried to Maria Elisabeth (went by Elisabeth) Frey Liedy (1770-1863) on 06 Jun 1814 and had one additional known child.

Adam married Christina Hege (1802-1874) on 05 Jun 1828 at Stokes (became Forsyth) County, North Carolina. Adam and Christina were the parents of seven known children, four girls and three boys; all of whom reached maturity. Adam was listed variously as a land-lord, hotel keeper, and Academy (Moravian?) Steward in the 1850 through 1880 censuses. In 1850 and 1860 he was listed as a slave holder (4 in 1850 and 6 in 1860). The seven known children were:

1. Harriet Rebecca Butner Clemmons (1829-1910)
2. James Alexander Butner (1831-1912)
3. Augustus Benjamin Butner (1833-1910)
4. Emma Sophia Butner (1836-1927)
5. Sarah Louisa Butner (1838-1828)
6. Maria Caroline Butner Thomas (1840-1905)
7. Lewis Edward Butner (1844-1881)

Adam was the grand-father of 13 known grandchildren.
