Journalist. A graduate of Andrews University in Michigan, he began his career in Washington, D.C. as a reporter for the National Rifle Association and became the editor of its magazine, The American Rifleman. He assigned himself to Europe in 1943 and was enlisted by Edward R. Murrow to help in covering World War II. He was among a handful of reporters who gave firsthand reports on the D-Day landings for CBS Radio. He and Murrow were the first reporters to report on the Buchenwald Concentration Camp and his stories on the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt earned him a "Witness to the Truth" award. In 1954 he became the first host for "Face the Nation" and in 1958 he began working as the evening anchor for ABC in New York City, New York, which led him to be chosen to moderate the third debate between Presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon in 1960. He retired from journalism in 1963 and began teaching at the University of Washington until he retired in 1975.
