Anna Teresa was the fifth of eleven children of Joseph Schaaf (1828-1911) and Franciska Cecilia (called Frances) Stimmler (1835-1912), both immigrants from Alsace. Anna grew up on the family farm near Murdock, MN (see image). In 1880 census made on 7 and 8 June lists her as Annie with her family in the town of Dublin, MN and says she is "at school," though there is an 1880 St, Paul city directory listing for an Annie Schaaf, a domestic worker living at 98 Jackson. In 1885, Anna lives with her sister Mary Magdalena Schaaf Weber, and Marie's family, in Murdock.

On 7 Nov. 1888 in St. Paul, MN, Anna married Edwin Theron Dana (b. 1858; died ca. 1933). The couple had three children: Capadora (1890-1973), Clinton Gregory (1891-1969), and Theron George (1895-1949).

By 1895, they were farming in Murdock, MN, where they lived in 1900; the 1905 state census lists them in Dublin, MN. A letter written in Feb. 1955 by their son Clint (b. in 1891) recalls that his parents started a grocery store business in Murdock "later supplemented by some kind of a feed grinding establishment, and still later by outright farming." The grocery store was located next door to Mat Schalgel's "magnificent" hotel. The family lived in the back of the store. When Clint was 16 years old (ca. 1907), his father sold the store and liquidated his holdings. In 1910, Edwin is still in Dublin, living with his two sons (ages 18 and 15). His daughter and his wife are no longer living with the family. The 1910 census finds Anna Teresa (listed as married) in Alexandria, MN working as a servant (a cook) for an elderly couple, the Baumbachs; Fred Baumbach is a collector for the IRS. In 1920, Mrs. Anna Dana works as a clerk at the Golden Rule, the well-known department store, in St. Paul and Theron George has "moved to Minneapolis."

The 1920 St. Paul city directory indicates that Anna, listed as Mrs. Anna T Dana, lives at 582 Lafond and works at the Golden Rule. She is at 578 LaFond in the 1921 and later directories, listed as Anna T. Dana, widow of Edwin (though Edwin is still alive). The federal census of 1930 finds her at the same address; she lives alone as head of household, and she owns her own home, valued at $1900. She is 68, listed as a widow, literate, and not employed.

During that decade, she moved to Long Beach, California, where her aunt Maria Schaaf Weber lived. Maria had died in 1937 and it is likely that Anna had been living with her. The California Death index lists her as age 70 (though she was actually 76).
