ROCKLAND - Vincent B. Alley, 88, formerly of Spruce Head, died Thursday, May 15, 2003 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport after a long illness. Born in Jonesport, April 1, 1915, he was one of nine children of Frank W. and Edna Beal Alley. At a young age he moved with his family to Whitehead Island, where his father served as Lightkeeper. He was educated in local schools.

Mr. Alley was a decorated World War II, U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He served in campaigns at Guadal Canal, Okinawa, and was wounded at both Peleliu and Tarawa, for which he received the Purple Heart with Star. After six years and three months of service, Staff Sergeant Alley returned to Whitehead Island.

On November 14, 1947, he married Lunette E. Gray in a double ceremony in which Donald and Julia Mealey Brackett were also married. The Alley's made their first home at Whitehead and in 1948 moved to Spruce Head where they resided until moving here following Mr. Alley's retirement.

Mr. Alley was pre-deceased by three siblings Alice Rackliff, Agatha Flood and John Alley. Besides his wife of 55 years, Mr. Alley is survived by his son, Dennis W. and his wife Theresa of Spruce Head; his daughter, Gail Widdecombe and her husband Harold, Jr. of Rockland; two brothers and their wives, Stephen and Lois Stackpole-Alley of Rockport, Virl and Ruth Alley of Old Orchard, three sisters, Evelyn Lucas of Hope and Florida, Vada Rackliff and her husband Frank of Spruce Head, Thelma Fuller and her husband Nathan of St. George; four grandchildren, Travis J. Widdecombe and his wife Jennie, Jarret L. Widdecombe, Jody L. Widdecombe, Terracina Nash and her husband Robert; three great-grandchildren, Hanna Rose Widdecombe, Duncan M. Widdecombe, Cheyenne Elaine Nash as well as many nieces and nephews.
