OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Virl M. Alley, 98, of the Salvation Army, was Promoted to Glory in the early morning on April 5, 2016, from Scarborough Terrace, Scar- borough.
Born on July 2, 1917, in Beals Island, to Frank and Edna Beal Alley, he was educated in the local schools and at The Salvation Army College for Officer Training, New York, N.Y.
He married the former Ruth Bippus in 1943 and began a shared pastoral ministry at Salvation Army centers in Westbrook, Augusta, Danbury, Conn., Covington, Ky., Columbus (Goodale), Ohio, Columbus (Pontiac), Ohio, Frankfurt, Ky., Cincinnati, Ohio, New York, N.Y., Marion, Oh., Chillicothe, Ohio., Old Orchard Beach, and Keene, N.H. He and Ruth retired to Old Orchard Beach following their final assignment at The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Ruth was Promoted to Glory on March 28, 2015.
Virl is survived by his children, Lt. Colonel Elaine Rader, Bethlehem, Pa., Karen Claussen, North Waterboro, and Donald Alley, Powell, Ohio; grandchildren, Alfred Claussen, Townshend, Vt., Kim Claussen, Scarborough, Bramwell Rader, Bethlehem, Pa., Damon Rader, Long Beach, N.Y., Evangeline Rader Discini, Union Beach, N.J., and Tucker Rader, Melbourne, Australia; 11 great-grandchildren; brother Steve Alley; and three sisters, twin Veda, Evelyn and Thelma.
Visiting hours will be on Thursday, April 7, from 6-8 p.m., at
Dennett, Craig and Pate Funeral Home
, 365 Main St., Saco. A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Friday, April 9, at 7 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 2 Sixth St., Old Orchard Beach. Brian Smith will officiate. Private family burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
