Enlisted in US Army, 25 September,1940. Stationed at Ft. Lewis,WA, Battery F, 99th FA. In Sitka,AK,Oct 4,1941 and at Ft Greely,Kodiak, Alaska( 98th FA). As noted in the Sitka Military History Alaska, arrival at Kodiak:
Battery C, 98th Field Artillery Bn, arrived on the Grant with 4 officers and 179 enlisted men 7 October 1941. The day was marked in letters home, however, by the fact that 17 lieutenants of the Army Nurse Corps arrived on the same ship. 1st Lt. Maude E. Carraway was Chief Nurse. The posts small mimeographed newspaper, "The Weekly Sun," headlined the event.
Overseas, A.P.T.O., from 30 Sept 41 to 17 Apr 44.
Rotated USA ,April 1944 to November 21,1944. Sent to E.T.O. 21 Nov 44.
Served in Aleutian; Rhineland; Central Europe. Awarded 3 Bronze Stars for the above campaigns and a Good Conduct Medal.
Awarded Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service against an enemy, between 16 February 1945 to 8 May 1945, in the France and Germany ETO. " By his technical skill and unflagging efforts he made an important contribution in the success of his or anization during the campaign. During a situating evolving(sic) almost continuos displacement, often into areas subject to shelling and strafing, he filled a position of great importance handling with ability and dispatch calls for delivery of fire necessary to destroy the enemy. "( AFO 101, U.S. Army). Entitled to wear Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon; American Defense Service Ribbon with Bronze Star; European-African-Middle Eastern Theater campaign; 6 Overseas Bars. A.S.R. Score ( 12 May 45 ) 107. Left Antwerp,Belgium, on the N. Y. U. Victory, on 20 Aug 1945 for USA home.Division was sent to Camp Cook, CA for the invasion of Japan.
