William Smiley married Christiana Martin on 1 Jan 1840 per the family bible.


On the 1870 Augusta Co., Virginia census, millright Wm Smiley, 70; Christiana, 64; Thos M., 27; Mary A., 25 and Letitia, 23, all Virginia born.


His marker is beside the Smiley graves of Christiana, Thos and Ellen, plus Martins: Jas J and R.A.E.


Aged 78 yr 3 mo. Source of burial here: Rockbridge County, Virginia Cemeteries, South River and Walker Creek Districts, by the Rockbridge Area Genealogical Society, 1999, page 149.


The William Smiley family bible lists births, marriages and deaths. It was printed in 1845 and it was offered by Mrs. Richard Hogshead of Middlebrook to the New Providence Congregation. It is on Film # 007769168 on Familysearch 96/759.


"SMILEY---On the 24th inst., at his residence, in Newport, Augusta county, Mr. Wm. Smiley, aged about 79 years. Sterling." Published in the Staunton Spectator, Vol 55, #50, dated 3 Sep 1878.


"Died on the 24th inst., at his residence, in Newport, Augusta county, Mr. Wm. Smiley, aged about 79 years. He was a native of Rockbridge county, (near Fairfield,) and for many years an exemplary member of the Presbyterian Church, a good husband, father-neighbor, and Christian, he doubtless realized in the language of Watts, that "death is the gate to endless joy."  Published in the Valley Virginian dated 29 Aug 1878.
