MANTEO - Mrs. Essie Dough Payne, 77, died Monday night, Sept. 6, 1982, in the Albemarle Hospital following a long illness. She was the wife of Reuben Elliot Payne, Sr.

She was a native of Dare County and lived here most of her life. Mrs. Payne was a member of the Roanoke Island Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Mrs. Esther Baum Dough.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Payne is survived by her daughter, Mrs. S.C. (Jean) Basnight of Manteo; two sons: Reuben E. Payne, Jr. of Newport News, VA and David R. Payne of the home; two sisters: Mrs. Mary D. Craddock of Manns Harbor and Mrs. Jessie D. Sawyer of Portsmouth, VA; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon in the Roanoke Island Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Carroll, pastor, and the Rev. Cliff Shoaf, pastor of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Manteo Cemetery.
