Hudspeth County Pioneer, Ollie Ona McAdoo Hammack, 79, of Salt Flat, Texas passed away Wednesday, May 31, 1984 in an El Paso hospital.
She was born to Jervis Edgar McAdoo and Lizzie Ella Bird McAdoo on September 18, 1904 in the home on Crabapple Creek, Oxford, Llano Co., Texas.The following year on August 5, 1905, her mother died in child birth and on August 19, 1905 her little brother, Edgar Bird McAdoo died and both are buried in the family cemetery, Crabapple Cemetery, Oxford, Texas.
In 1908, Jervis Edgar McAdoo and his brother, Marian Preston McAdoo filed on homestead land near Van Horn, Texas. They were granted the land in January of 1908. With a wagon each, 2 teams of horses to pull them and 2 saddle horses to ride, they left Llano County for far West Texas. The family consisted of Jervis McAdoo, daughters, Vida McAdoo, Ona McAdoo. Sons, Vivian, and Sylvester McAdoo and Uncle Marian and wife Carrie and their two children Pauline and Emmett McAdoo. Another son, Gordon McAdoo, was already working on a ranch near Van Horn, and later bought land joining the homesteaded land. Sylvestor Marian McAdoo died of typhoid feaver in 1917 and is burried in Van Horn, Texas.
Ollie Ona McAdoo and Edwin Walter Hammack were married June 14, 1921 in El Paso, Texas. They came home to live with his mother and sister at the family home where Ed took care of the Hammack Ranch. On April 21, 1922 their daughter, Helen Isobel Hammack was born in the home.
