Nettie was born in Washington, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana on 20 Jan 1878 to Reuben G. and Mary Elizabeth Starnes Adkins. Nettie had six older siblings; Thomas Morgan, Elvira May, Corilla Gertrude, George, Katherine and Mary Caroline.
When Nettie was about 10 months old, her dad died around December of 1878. The family continued to live in the St. Landry Parish area for some time. At some point in time Nettie along with sisters, Katy and Callie and her mom went to live in Texas with Uncle Finus Ewing Starnes. Nettie went on to live with her Aunt Susan Gertrude Starnes Greer and her family and it was in Mount Pleasant, Titus County, Texas that she met and married James Robert Jones. They were married in Mount Pleasant, Texas on 28 Sept. 1897.
Nettie and James Robert had seven children: Paul Kinsey, Mary Earnest, Thomas Hampton, Louis Joseph, Travis Milton, Melvin Curtis and Sam Anderson.
