Funeral services will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday Funeral Home, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Peter, with the Rev. Earl J. Dionne officiating. Visitation is today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Shrine of Rest Mausoleum at Ledgeview Memorial Park. A memorial in his name will be established.
He was born Sept. 5, 1924, in the Town of Taycheedah, a son of William J. and Florence Freund Schmitz. On Oct. 13, 1951, he married Elfrieda Sabel at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary.
Mr. Schmitz was employed as a machinist for 40 years at Mercury Marine, where he retired in 1986. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, St. Peter Athletic Club, Mercury Marine Quarter Century Club and Mercury Marine Union Lodge 1947. "Schmitty" also was an avid fisherman and snowmobiler, and was a member of the Holyland Snowfliers. He is survived by his wife; his parents, who reside in Fond du Lac; four brothers, Orlando and his wife Margaret, Elmer and his wife Julitta, Jerome and his wife Joan, and Gerald and his wife Bernice, all of St. Peter. and a sister-in-law, Lillian Schmitz of St. Cloud. He was preceded In death by his brother, Louie, in 1989.
