Note: Conrad Maugans *Nick* Traveled by night because he and another man were both seeking a grant for the same parcel of land. And Conrad walked (which was the mode of traveling at the time) all night on his way to Annapolis, Maryland, to get the grant, and the other man evidently slept at night. Anyway the result was that Conrad Maugans was standing on the steps of the Capitol Building, at Annapolis in the morning with the grant in his pocket when the second man arrived. Hence the nickname.

Note: The wife of Conrad Maugans has not been recorded, it is thought her first name was Anna Rebecca.

Note: Children: Peter Maugans; Magdalina Abigail Maugans, married David Miller, removed to Clermont County, Ohio; Catherine Maugans, married Abraham Miller removed to Clermont County, Ohio; Mathias Maugans, married Mary Frey removed to Clermont County,Ohio; Abraham Maugans, married Elizabeth Frey removed to Washington County, Maryland the founder of Maugansville.

Mary Maugans, married John Frey; John Maugans; Elizabeth Maugans, married Frederick Weaver and removed to Clermont County, Ohio; Gabriel Maugans, married Esther Miller removed to Warren County, Ohio. Note: over time the spelling Gabriel's last name became Morgan; Daniel Maugans, married Susannah removed to Clermont County, Ohio; Barbara Maugans, married John H. Myers; David Maugans, married Catherine Blickinstaff. David remained in Maryland. In 1836 his wife and two daughters removed to Miami County, Ohio. Son John Maugans was already residing in Miami County, Ohio.

Note: A number of the Maugans family members that moved to Ohio spelled the last name Morgan.

Note: The information written above was added to the memorial by another member. Not sure of its accuracy. Need more documentation.

Note: To family of the Maugans.

The Maugans Tombstones that are in Salem United Methodist Cemetery, formally name the United Brethren Cemetery, in the back row on your left going into Cemetery, do not have the remains or coffins there. The tombstones were moved from Conrad's farm off Harp Hill Road, back in the seventies. So the family could visit the stones. Not sure what family did this. I was told this by Leah Spade of Wolfsville, she was there back when they did it.

Note: Also there are still some tombstones left on the farm.

Note: Conrad does not have a stone in Salem Cemetery. He is buried at the old Maugans Farm on Harp Hill Road in Wolfsville.

Note: I have added a copy of Conrad Maugans Will to his pictures for future families. The will is dated March 15, 1813.

Note: Original will was written in German.

Note: Conrad's children name in his will.
