For 54 Years, Dies

Funeral services were held at the Nocona Baptist Church Tuesday, December 17th, at 2:30 p.m. for Port Howard, who passed away in a Wichita Falls hospital Monday, Dec. 16. Rev. Warren officiated at the service with Rev. Harry M. Roark, assisting. Interment was made in the Nocona cemetery under the direction of the Daugherty Funeral Home.
A.P. (Port) Howard was born April 7, 1887, at Bonita, Texas. He lived there for 31 years after which he moved to Rowland where he resided until his death except for a period of five years which he lived in Nocona. Mr. Howard and Miss Mary McMillan were joined in wedlock January 22, 1907 ,at Bonita. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. All were with him when he departed life. He passed away at the age of 54 years, 7 months and 9 days.
Mr. Howard who was a well known citizen of all Montague County lived at all times a life of devoted service to his fellow men, enjoying their friendship in his home, his business, and in his community life.
Rev. Roark gave the scripture readings and led in prayer and Rev. Little of Bluegrove also led in prayer. The obituary remarks were given by Re. Warren. The song service was rendered by the choir, who sang "Nearer My God to Thee," and "In The Sweet Bye and Bye." Dick Gaines quartet sang a special number, "Farther Along," and Lila Faye Boyd gave a solo number, "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be."
Pallbearers were A.A. Payne, Henry McGaughy, Bill Howard, V.W. Redman, Julis 43 25 May 2010 Haralson, and Charlie Frailey.
Survivors include his wife; the following children, Gordon Howard, Anarene; Joe Weldon Howard, Harold Eugene Howard, Mrs. W.S. Brooks, Mrs. Walter Simpkins, Mrs. Jack Goodspeed all of Nocona; Mrs. Walter Humble of Freer; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Dave Jones, Chillicothe; Mrs. Spence Phillips, Bonita; Mrs. Mamie Armstrong, Erick,
Oklahoma; two brothers, B.H. Howard, Abernathy and J.C. Howard, Atoka, Oklahoma. Many nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive him.
All the business houses in Nocona closed Tuesday afternoon during the services to show their respect to Mr. Howard.
